Promoting the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Organic Chemistry Education through Undergraduate Research Experiences at WSSU

Undergraduate research is well recognized as an effective high-impact educational practice associated with student success in higher education. Actively engaging students experiences considered one of the several practices by many agencies including American Chemical Society. Developing and maintaining active undergraduate program benefits both faculty especially those from under-represented minority groups (URM). The infusion into curriculum enables all backgrounds to develop independent critical thinking skills, written oral communications skills that are very important for successful careers “STEM” area. Several strategies activities such a Peer Mentoring Program (PMP), funded activities, organic chemistry labs, professional development, group meetings, presentations at regional/national conferences, publishing co-authors on peer-review papers vital creating welcoming promotes diversity, equity, inclusion working projects, presenting their data conferences will greatly increase (URM) students’ chance landing job or getting admitted graduate/professional programs STEM
